AJS and Matchless Owners Club Limited

AJS & Matchless Owners Club
Limited

Machine Dating Service

The Club provides two separate services, and it may help if we explain the subtle differences:

1. DVLC V765 Scheme - Reclaming original Registration Number

Applications to be supported by acceptable documentary evidence, two recent photographs, and the relevant DVLC Forms V765 and V55/5, together with the Club fee of £30. All machines will be inspected on behalf of the Club and must be in a complete, assembled condition.

Although nothing in this world is "certain", if an old log book (RF6O/VE6O) is held then everything should proceed smoothly. For those not wishing to part with their old log books, the DVLC advise that owners may take these to their local Vehicle Registration Office who will provide a certified photocopy, bearing the VRO stamp, which may then be forwarded with application. However, only copies certified in this manner can be accepted. Alternative evidence will be considered by the DVLC, in the form of pre-1983 tax discs, pre-1983 insurance certificate, pre-1983 bill of sale, etc.

It is always advisable to ascertain from the DVLC that your registration number is not currently on their computer, as this will save you going through the whole application process only to perhaps find that the number has been re-issued, with the only recourse than being to apply for an age-related number. The DVLC Enquiry Unit telephone number is 08702 400010.

Please note that the final decision on acceptance of all applications rests with the DVLA and, if rejected, the Club's fee is not refundable.

2. Documentation Regarding Age-Related Registrations

Issue of Dating Certificates to assist in the issue of an age-related number.
A clear, close-up photo of frame and engine number stampings must always be provided, plus a note of the gearbox number. The Machine Dating Officer will then issue a Dating Certificate to support applications for DVLC age related registrations - a separate letter is also supplied, quoting detail from the factory dispatch records.
The fee for this service is £8.50 to Club Members and £12.50 to non-members.

The Machine Dating Service also provides the following services, and it may help members if we explain the subtle differences. The fee in each case is £8.50 to Club Members and £12.50 to non-members.

DATING LETTERS to assist with identification of miscellaneous frame, engine and gearbox numbers. Before commencing a 'rebuild' it is advisable to have the frame number checked to ascertain the correct marque, i.e. AJS or Matchless. Members may also wish to use this service to check validity when purchasing a machine. Please note that all queries of a technical nature should be made via the Technical Helpline.

CERTIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY - detailing frame, engine, gearbox and registration number, together with Manufacturer's Specifications. Of A4 size and embossed with the Club seal, signed and individually numbered, these look great framed and hanging on the wall of your favourite room. Whilst typically designed for 'all original' machines. if required, they can be supplied quoting a replacement engine/gear box unit.

When writing, please include a stamped, self addressed envelope with your request.

An example of a certificate can be seen here.

All information is supplied from the original factory dispatch records.
