Roy Bacon's Book

Postby One pot » Wed Dec 29, 2010 11:13 am

Several times in various posts the "Roy Bacon book" is referenced

I have been given some lovely amazon vouchers and I am looking to buy it.

However, there appear to be a few

1 AJS & Matchless Postwar Singles 1945-1969

2 AJS and Matchless _ the Postwar Models: Lightweight and Heavyweight Singles and Twins from 1945

3 Ajs and Matchless: The Post-War Models

In addition I saw a photo of one with the word "restoration" on the front.

I own a bitsa basically a 1954 18S - can anyone direct me to the most appropriate version. clearly 1 looks the best, but does 2 contain all the same information? and the one with "Restoration2 on the front - is that one of the above?

The reason for wanting the book is to better understand the bike as I continue its rolling restoration.

Thanks and a happy new year to you all

The " AJS and Matchless -The Postwar models" is a comprehensive history of the development of the bikes over the years. The second, "Matchless and AJS Singles and Twins Restoration" goes into more detail about detail differences with photos of individual components of different models. It has detailed listsgiving dates of introduction of changes in colours, components, etc They are both invaluable in their own way. Roy Bacon also published a briefer overview book that is not going to be as much use to you, so beware.

all I have wanted for years now is for someone to publish a decent set of explosion drawings for the Matchless/AMC Hybrids...chassis, sub-assemblies etc etc

with corresponding part numbers indexed and referenced

a lofty concept for certain

Unlike many maker's, AMC did not produce many "explosion" drawings. Their spares lists show parts of different positions & scale, not to mention related parts in different drawings making assembly from them difficult. My Norton spares manuals have almost no drawings. If you want them, you will have to produce them yourself. Cheers, Don.

as a complete AMC virgin I purchased a copy of Bacons AJS/Matchless restoration book, a good few years ago, while I found it informative and helpful I became very frustrated with the line about petrol tanks which explained what model had what but did not go into any detail, the best thing to do is go to the local club meet and simply ask questions, a lot of the guys have been involved with AMC machines for a long time and their knowledge is invaluable, Helpliner is also a wonderful avenue of assistance, Bacons book is very interesting and does contain a lot of facts and figures but do'nt expect it to tell you everything. kind regards

Hi All and thanks for the comments.

I dont expect it to be the panacea (very few things are) but as it regularly gets positive comments and I have an amazon voucher burning a hole in in my pocket I thought I would take the plunge (well a little splash) but wanted to make sure that I bought the most applicable one.

Thanks again and Seasons greetings
