1959 Matchless G12 speedometer

Postby 39speedtwin » Mon Apr 15, 2013 3:30 pm

Not having any twins, I need to know the correct speedometer for a 1959 model G12, I only have lists for 1957 and 1962, there was no G12 in 1957 and listed for 1962 is SC 3312/00 small needle grey/black recessed face, which was also fitted to the Apache and G12CS.
Does anyone have an original G12 from this year who can confirm if SC 3312/00 was fitted in 1969 please? Dudley

Check your e mails Dudley for Smiths 1959 speedo's, I'm sure 1969 was a typo error in this posting.

Is it a G12CSR, a G12 De lux twin G12 twin or G12CS? If so there are two types listed for 1959. This was the Smiths 467/163/N and was fitted to the G12 twin, G12CSR, and G12 De Lux. The G12CS used S.491/3/N.
The Kilo version for the G12CS was S.491/7/N, and the other ones used S.467/16/N. There was also two speedo drive gearboxs used, 52283/66/1 and 70549/1. The revcounter that was also used on the G12 De Lux was RC.95/1. The speedo cables were 5ft 5 in in length, and the revcounter cable was 2ft 2 1/2 inches. The KLG spark plugs fitted to all the 1959 G12's was an FE80.
For the G12 range there was also alternative Speedos listed at 80mph, 120mph, 140kmh and 180kmh. Just in case you wanted to know Dudley. 8-)

the s467 and 491 are black faced ones. To see lists of face speedo numbers see Christian's archives under technical, speedos. Trouble is the face numbers don't actually tell you what the internal ratios were.

If you match the Speedo with the correct Speedo drive then the Speedo's internal ratio would not be a problem. This would go for all models as the manufactuer of the machine has already worked all this out with the instrument maker Smiths when the bikes were being prototyped and then put into production. The above info is as per the 1959 Smiths instrument book. 8-)
